My research has an inter-disciplinary focus on marine particle dynamics and its influence on regional carbon and nutrient budgets. On the one hand, this includes large and meso-scale oceanographic processes, such as cross-shelf transport and subduction of dense bottom waters in polar regions as well as eddy current dynamics. On the other hand, I am also interested in micro-scale element cycling within marine aggregates as well as the particle-associated microbial community driving elemental turnover. I am using underwater optics as well as oceanographical sensors but also (micro-)biological and chemical methods. I am closely collaborating with physical oceanographers, biogeochemists, and numerical modelers to bring my results into a broader context.
